Anagallis arvensisInflorescence and Leaves

The scarlet pimpernel is not native to North America, but instead arrived here in the bags of early European settlers. This specific plant was photographed in the Buffalo National River Park near an old homestead. Since the plant has often been used for its medicinal properties, it is possible that the plant came to Arkansas in the herbal kit of some pioneer woman. The species contains Saponin which is toxic to humans, but in the hands of herbalists the plant has been used since Roman times to treat a long list of maladies including mental disorders (depression).

The plant is sensitive to weather conditions and closes when rain is threatening. This fact gives rise to a group of common names, such as "Poor Man's Weather Glass" and "Shepherd's Weather Glass". However, the name I love best is "Wink-a-peep". Who could not love that name?

Beyond all that, the "Scarlet Pimpernel" has become the famous literary name of a character from an important novel of the same name set in revolutionary France.
