Spacer Guests can be assured that there is established evidence that this plant has been found in all of the green filled counties of Arkansas. However, the white filled counties should not be interpreted as counties in which this plant does not grow. Discriminating between the fifteen or so Arkansas species of St Johnswort has been difficult for me. However the description below by Dr. John Hilty has helped a great deal in identifying this plant.

"The easiest way to distinguish Spotted St. John's Wort from other similar species involves an examination of the flower petals. Dark dots and streaks can appear anywhere on the upper surface of the yellow petals, whereas for other species of St. John's Wort such dots and streaks are confined near the margins of the petals, or they are completely absent."

Hilty, J. Editor. 2012. “Comments- Hypericum punctatum.” at Illinois Wildflowers. Accessed 25 September 2012, available from Encyclopedia of Life, http://www.eol.org/data_objects/20609411.

I have created a table of images for six Hypericum species to help me learn to discriminate between them. If you would like, you may down load the Table for your own use. However, the file is quite large (5.5 Mb).
