Silphium perfoliatum - Leaves (Cup)Leaf Cup
Two opposite leaves of this plant near the top of the stem fuse together with the stem appearing to pass right through the leaves. Because the stem appears to perforate the leaves, botanists refer to such leaves as "perfoliate" and because this particular plant displays such a remarkable example of this trait the second word (specific epithet) of this plant's scientific name is "perfoliatum".
